about

I didn’t catch it in the theaters, but, when I eventually saw Pixar’s “Soul” I had a keyboard in front of me. I knew it was about jazz and obviously touched on the subject of ‘souls’, so in the way that The Funk moves me, I had the idea that while I experienced the film I would let my soul jazz to the experience. While I watched the film, I free jazz improvised on the piano what my soul felt like playing. I wanted to turn the whole experience into an album, so across the last 2 years, I did it two more times.

This album is meant to be played adjacently to the film (but can also be enjoyed as itself). There are three notes in the beginning as a “1-2-3/Ready, Set, Go”. First, play the album, then start the movie after the raised third note plays. It doesn’t have to be perfect, that’s the experience of life and jazz.

I’m not attempting to give you a “better” experience or amplify the film or soundtrack. This is an experience of one soul jazzing to and from another. Interpret it all as you will <3
